Boltzmann Brain Problem

speculative Contemporary 2002 (modern formulation)

A thought experiment/paradox arising from certain cosmological models, in which random thermodynamic fluctuations should statistically produce far more isolated self-aware “brains” than entire ordered universes — used as a stress-test against theories.

Proponents

Ludwig Boltzmann (origin of concept), Andreas Albrecht & Lorenzo Sorbo (modern cosmological framing)

Evidence For

A rigorous consequence of applying statistical mechanics to eternal/infinite universe models.

Evidence Against

Widely treated as a reductio ad absurdum signaling a flaw in the model producing it, rather than a claim about reality itself.
