Life & Consciousness

Panspermia

alternative Contemporary 1908 (Arrhenius); revived 1970s–2000s

Proposes that life, or its chemical precursors, did not originate on Earth but arrived from elsewhere in space via comets, meteorites, or interstellar dust.

Proponents

Svante Arrhenius, Fred Hoyle, Chandra Wickramasinghe

Evidence For

Amino acids and other organic compounds have been detected in meteorites and comets, showing such molecules can survive interstellar transit.

Evidence Against

Does not itself explain how life first originated, only relocates the question; surviving atmospheric entry intact remains a significant hurdle for anything more complex than simple molecules.
