Time, Determinism & Free Will

Presentism

mainstream Classical Ancient roots contrasted with Parmenides' eternalism; classical formulation by Augustine of Hippo, c. 400 CE; modern analytic defenses by Ned Markosian (2004) and others

Holds that only the present moment is real — the past no longer exists and the future does not yet exist — matching the common-sense view of time as a knife-edge “now” moving forward.

Proponents

Augustine of Hippo, Ned Markosian, Dean Zimmerman

Evidence For

Matches the near-universal, lived human experience that only the present moment is real, and avoids the extra ontological commitments of a full block universe or a perpetually growing one.

Evidence Against

Relativity's denial of any single, absolute simultaneity across space is difficult to square with presentism's requirement of one universal 'now' shared by the whole universe at once.
