Death & What Follows
Comparative Religious Afterlife Beliefs
Not a single theory but a family of beliefs describing consciousness or the soul persisting beyond bodily death — heaven, hell, and purgatory in Abrahamic traditions; reincarnation and liberation from rebirth in Hindu and Buddhist traditions; ancestor veneration and continued presence among the living in many other traditions — presented here descriptively rather than as an endorsement of any one account.
Proponents
Traditions across the major world religions
Evidence For
Belief in some form of survival after death is close to a human universal, appearing independently across nearly every recorded culture and era, which some take as evidence of a shared intuition worth taking seriously.
Evidence Against
The traditions are mutually incompatible in their specific claims, all lack any means of independent empirical verification, and psychologists studying the universality of the belief have proposed purely naturalistic explanations for why it would arise regardless of whether it is true (see Terror Management Theory).
