Growing Block Universe

alternative Contemporary 1923 (C. D. Broad); modern defenses by Michael Tooley (1997) and Peter Forrest (2004)

A middle position holding that the past and present are real, but the future does not yet exist at all — reality is a spacetime ‘block’ that is continuously growing as new moments come into being at its leading edge, the present.

Evidence For

Matches the common intuition that the past is fixed and settled while the future remains genuinely open — avoiding both eternalism's claim that the future is just as real as the past, and presentism's claim that almost nothing beyond this instant is real.

Evidence Against

Faces an "epistemic objection": if reality keeps growing at an advancing edge, observers have no way to be certain they are actually located at that true edge right now, since observers at any earlier edge would have felt exactly the same certainty.
