Mathematics & the Nature of Reality

Mathematical Universe Hypothesis

speculative Contemporary 1998 (initial paper); "Level IV multiverse" framing 2007; popularized in the book "Our Mathematical Universe," 2014

Proposes that our physical universe is not merely described by mathematics but literally is a mathematical structure — and, more radically, that every internally consistent mathematical structure exists physically as its own universe.

Proponents

Max Tegmark

Evidence For

Would trivially dissolve the mystery of why mathematics describes physical reality so well (see "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics") — because on this view there is no gap between the two to explain in the first place.

Evidence Against

Physicists Piet Hut and Mark Alford have argued the hypothesis is in tension with Gödel's incompleteness theorems, since not every consistent mathematical structure may be decidable or well-defined enough to 'be' a universe; critics broadly regard it as currently unfalsifiable and fringe.
