Steady-State Theory

historical Classical 1948

A historical rival to the Big Bang proposing the universe has no beginning or end, with matter continuously created as it expands to keep density constant.

Proponents

Fred Hoyle, Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold

Evidence For

Satisfied the "perfect cosmological principle" that the universe looks the same at all times, not just all places.

Evidence Against

Discovery of the cosmic microwave background in 1965 strongly favored an evolving, hot early universe and is considered to have effectively falsified it.
