Extraterrestrial Life & the Fermi Paradox
The Drake Equation
A probabilistic framework for estimating the number of communicating civilizations in the galaxy, multiplying factors like star formation rate, the fraction of stars with planets, and the fraction that develop intelligent, communicating life.
Proponents
Frank Drake
Evidence For
A widely used organizing framework; several of its astronomical factors (planet frequency, habitable-zone rates) are now reasonably well measured thanks to exoplanet surveys.
Evidence Against
Its biological and sociological factors — the fraction of planets developing life, intelligence, and long-lived civilizations — remain complete guesses spanning many orders of magnitude, leaving the equation's output essentially unconstrained.
